Smith Street Phone Trouble

I live right off of Smith Street and our home phone died last night. Incoming calls got a busy signal. Sound familiar to anybody? I ran into a Verizon repair man getting his breakfast at Frank’s place (p.s: best place ever). He said that there was a fire in a man-hole up at Livingston and all the wiring melted and all of smith street was in bad shape.

In fact he said he told his buddy ” you drive your truck down smith today you are gonna get mobbed. it’s a mess”. I asked him how long he thought it would take to get fixed and he said verizon was trying to work out some deal - maybe giving everybody cell phones. of course this is JUST A RUMOR - seeing as he was just a random guy - and he didn’t even have any official Verizon logos on him - so don’t bank on what I am saying. But the idea of giving out cell phones leads me to believe that service will be out for a while.

Good thing we have vonage at the office.

We went with AT&T CallVantage.. Our new Linksys WiFi router came with the VoIP router built-in. So far, no complaints. Every once in a while I need to log-in to the router and release our DHCP lease when things get mess-up, but that’s more a problem with TimeWarner’s cable service than anything else. It’s nice to get our voicemail in emails. I’d never go with a POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) line again.. it’s sooo 1890’s ;-)

Geez, I live on Sackett Street and my phone has been out since the 11th also. Every time that I call Verizon to complain they say they are working on it and keep delaying the estimated fix time. I have no DSL at home now and am forced to work from a coffee shop. This stinks! Last I heard it could take until Thanksgiving to get fixed! I can’t imagine how this is affecting businesses like delivery restaurants, which depend on their phones.

[...] Now, I like a little cat nap on the job as much as the next person, but these two verizon trucks were clearly hiding out down in our out-of-sight corner of the neighborhood. The funny bit is that I had schedule a service person to come by and check out our home phone between 8-noon today. Turns out they were too busy napping (yes he is sleeping) right on the corner. No call, no service note, no nothing. I called verizon and they said that we would get credited for the time the phones were down, and that they probably won’t be up till at least friday due to the fire. [...]

Frank’s Place? Is it still around? I am looking for good breakfast places in Brooklyn Heights.
