There goes the neighborhood - part II - McDonalds

This morning someone posted the following comment to our post regarding the Starbucks and the general corporatization and suburbanization of the nabe. I figured this deserved a bit of special attention.

I recently heard that a McDonald’s is opening in the laundromat on Court and President and the Blockbuster is closing and may become a Commerce Bank. This neighborhood is going to be overrun with pharmacies and banks!!!!

Can this be true? A MCDONALDS? Anybody else heard this rumor? By the way - I absolutely love the Bleach House and would be very sorry to see not only a McDonalds move in, but the Bleach House move out. (if that is infact -the location they are talking about)

That’s so bad that I can’t wrap my mind around it yet.

  2. Dan Says:

Yikes. Why would God let this happen?!!

  3. pf Says:

surely this is a joke, right? RIGHT?!?!?!
who all is game for a picket line?

  4. Maria Says:

If the rumor is true, that’s going to be one really small MacDonald’s, unless they’ve taken the space that used to be the little hat shop on President just off the corner of Court. I noticed the hat shop closed recently which is too bad. Wonder if that’s the reason. I hope it’s just that, a rumor.

McDonald’s in the Bleach House? Yikes! Where will I do my laundry now? I’ll have to ask the lady working there if she’s heard that rumour.

Some other rumoured closing from curbed.com:

According to the comments, the theatre is not closing. But geez, how many banks and pharmacies does a neighborhood need?

can’t anybody do something about all these inappropriate businesses moving in? what about the community board? are people supposed to just sit abck and deal with our neighborhood being scarred by this crap? God i hope this is just a rumor! i’m in for the picket line Pf!

Well, maybe, if perchance, the Mc D’s could fit in with the neighborhood…. wait impossible. I am not ahppy about this, if its true.

PS: has anyone noticed that awful condo on 2nd place? Its pure awfulness.

I am not a fan of the Dunken Donuts either. Ugghhh.

For what it is worth…I spoke to the owner of the Bleach House about renting the empty shop on President St. last week. Though he does not own the building and is only a tenant himself, he does have a number of years left on the lease and seemed that he was not going anywhere.

  9. Alexuma Says:

What’s going on on Union near Smith, where the Marco Polo valet parking used to be? Does anyone know? Condos? It’s a tall building. Looks like they are putting in front balconies.

  10. Maria Says:

I believe it’s condos similar to the ones on Degraw between Smith & Court. Might possibly be the same developer.

  11. Andrew Says:

Maybe it’ll be a HUGE pharmacy! Or a bank!

Sorry, I haven’t said anything in a while and felt like I should contribute.

  12. lovemycarroll Says:

anyone know what’s going in the Sparky’s Bar space at Court and Nelson? Seen people
working in there lately after quite a lull in renovation…please don’t say bank, or fast food, or pharmacy!.

  13. cfittsgo Says:

OK…now a neighbor tells me the Met Food on Smith St is closing down. Is he confusing that with the Key Food/Court Street closing, or is this another bank/pharmacy/disaster waiting to happen?

  14. Dan Says:

I hear they’re closing Banania and putting in a Wal-Mart.

    Sike.

i recently found this blog and all the neighborhood concerns are JUST the thing that I’ve been looking forward to. However, is there something we can do aside from bitching (not a comment on you guys, all i’ve been doing is bitching in public, it’s natural). I think some real organization and boycotting might be a good idea. Pamphlets, leaflets? I’m not that type of person either, never done anything remotely like that in my life, but i LOVE this neighborhood and the upswing in gentrification (whatever you want to call it, yes, it is already gentrified, but this is becoming too much; almost an assault) is getting out of control.

I would love to see signs all over the neighborhood that say, “Support Local Business Whenever Possible,” or something to that effect. I’m not a store owner either. I work in Manhattan, but when a place like The Fall Cafe (which I heart) has to raise its prices because of escalating rents (corporate chains gladly pay higher rents to squeeze out the small guy) you really start to feel the effects of whats happening.

i refuse to go to Dunkin fuckin Donuts and Starbucks. There’s absolutely no need for the former and i refuse the latter.

Anyone at all with me? I’d love to be part of some sort of consolidation of efforts.
    feel free to email.

Also, does anyone know the status of Brooklyn Social? Last time i was in there they had a sign up that said, “help keep BK Social open and sign our petition” because apparently the neighbors had been complaining. I was only in their briefly, but i would gladly sign that petition (multiple times if need be).

  18. Maria Says:

I don’t know what the story is with Brooklyn Social, but last Thursday night I walked by at 11:30 pm on my home from the theater. I was across the street walking over to President, and it was LOUD and the door was CLOSED. I could only imagine what it sounded like for those who live above the club and on either side. Personally, I don’t blame the neighbors for complaining. People — who have to get up early in the morning or have small children who have to stay asleep or elderly people who may be ill — have every right to complain about excessive noise, and heaven knows what time BS closes. I’m sure the later the hour, the louder it gets. There has to be some way to find a compromise.

[...] I am in awe of the attention paid to speculation about recent and future business closings in Carroll Gardens. I think it all may have started when a local pizza shop closed and a Dunkin Donuts was slated to fill the space. Then the Carroll Court Pharmacy closed, to be replaced by a Chase bank. [...]

That’s so bad. Commercial institutions tend to spawn quickly in an area with big population. Given that fact, we could say, it’s bound to happen, anyways.
