All my crap needs a vacation home
We’re thinking of biting the bullet and getting a storage space for all of our extraneous, randomly used crap (that is cherished enough that it won’t be in the next stoop sale) such as ye ‘ol Simpsons Christmas village, sewing machine, camping supplies, guitars, etc. I’ve started collecting some prices on local storage facilities to compare prices on 5×5 and 5×10 spaces and this is what I’ve found.
If you have any insight into any of these joints, feel free to comment. Perhaps there is a good place I’ve missed. The StorageUSA seems like the best deal, although we may just go for the $87 special at Stop & Stor.

I’ve already heard a few negative comments about American Self Storage, the most alarming was that they change the rental price on you quite a bit, and without notice and then debit your account directly. Ouch!

There is a storage place on 3rd Avenue between Carroll and 3rd Streets. I am not sure of the name but it is fairly new and I think they offer the 1st month free or some other promotion like that.

Thanks for the tip! I looked it up - it’s called Premier Storage
http://www.premierstorage.net/.
They don’t seem to have 5×5 spaces but the 5×10 is $130/month.

Premier Storage on 3rd is great - have used them for the last 6 months or so and have been happy. Can’t say I did any comparison shopping, but I’ve been really happy.

I had a good experience with Moishe’s near the Navy Yard.

I just checked them out. The 5×5x8 space is $85 and the 5×10 is $139.
I’ll update the chart above.
Also, does anybody have a non-climate controlled storage space? I’m wondering if things like winter clothes and such will get all nasty without some climate control.

I had a non-climate controlled space for a couple of years @ the 14th st. U-Haul (which I do NOT recommend due to rodents). My stuff was fine, re: temperature though.

As an area supervisor of a small company, (we have 5 storage facilities in Colorado and Texas), there are a couple of other factors you might want to consider. Will they guarantee no price increases for 6 months and put it in writing? Will they give a discount if you pay say, 6 months or a year in advance? What is the bottom line cost to move in? P.S. almost forces you to buy their insurance and charges you a non-refundable administration fee ( I hate it when I am nickle and dimed to death). These costs are usually not revealed until you show up with a truck full of “randomly used crap”. Currently in Colorado large units (10×10 or bigger) are getting very scarce. And … the two lbiggest dangers to your crap are theft (get a big lock or rent at place with individual alarms) and water damage (roof lieaking). In some cases you get what you pay for. State of the art security systems cost money.

I open a self storage in Hong Kong.
I hope all the self storage user can do the same thing as you to comparion the difference between all the self storage.
I provide good service & low price anyway.
