Where bicycles go to die

Cruising around the Gowanus area this weekend I ran into this pile of stripped bicycles and busted up car radios. Hmmm… could there be a criminal element in the area?

Is that near the intersection of Douglass and Bond? If so, there is a sketchy spot right next to the C-Town that looks almost like a tiny little bicycle dump. There’s always a group of people hanging out and drinking beer. Nobody seems to be selling, repairing or mending any bikes. Very odd.

This was actually closer to 3rd avenue and 6th/7th/8th street - someplace around there.

Those bikes have beached themselves. That’s where they go to die in peace.

And when other bikes pass, they pause and caress the rusted frames, recognizing their own kind and their own mortality.

It is such ashame to see bicycle dicarded in this manner, after all, bicycles are a great way to help us stay healthy and fit. A bicycle is also ‘green’ friendly - no fuel, no noise and, apart from excellent exercise, is a great and inexpensive way to get around. I do hope some of these bikes are returned to good use.
