Always something new on smith

Every week there seems to be something new opening, closing or revamping on Smith Street. Here are some new and exciting additions…

Can I tell you, how much I love cheese? Almost as much as I love the name of this new cheese store on Degraw and Smith — STINKY! This new joint, soon to be opened by the folks that bring us Smith and Vine has taken the first step in living out my dream of having a cheese, mustard and pickle shop all to my own. I don’t know if they will have mustard and pickles (my own little fantasy) but the cheese is the most important part anyway. (I’m not the only excited blogger)

Also new on the block is a women’s clothing/dress shop called BIRD (with 2 other location in the slope). I’ve been watching this renovation in progress for some time, and love the green windows. Even better, I can actually imagine buying one of these dresses. Looks like they have very cute stuff, hopefully it isn’t too pricey.

While this is all fine and dandy, can someone please explain to me what the fuck happened to Baluchi’s?!?!??!?!?! Their leaving the street is nothing short of criminal as none of the other Indian establishments can touch them…I might cry……..

I can’t say I had any love for Baluchis. I didn’t dislike them exactly, but I thought they were overpriced (you had to pay extra for rice — at an Indian place??) The place was always so cold inside too. And last but not least, and this is just a personal thing with me, but I can’t stand copper goblets for drinking. Cold metal glasses - ack - it actually makes my teeth hurt to think about them.

sorry - Bird is way too expensive to what they have. I got caught in the rain sunday and went in to escape it and stared at $400 shirts in disbelief….

Word on Chowhound is that Baluchi’s may be replaced with a French restaurant. There’s also a mention that Tuk Tuk will be closing soon.

I hope Tuk Tuk is replaced with a snooty women’s boutique or pharmacy!

Oh wow that is expensive! I generally don’t break the $50-60 mark for any garments, especially a shirt! Perhaps I am cheap, but I really can’t convince myself to buy the boutique high priced items on smith/court. Which is a shame, cause I love shopping, and I love this neighborhood - alas, two loves that don’t seem to meet. I wish there was an affordable boutique alternative in the Brooklyn area? Anybody care to chime in on their best, cutest, most affordable finds?

I hope they replace Tuk Tuk with a donut shop.

For fun, you can sing Wings’ great “Mamunia” as “Banania” instead.

for what its worth…apparently baluchi’s is moving up to 5th ave in park slope and a new french crepery (sp?) is moving in.

For an affordable Brooklyn boutique, check out Red Lipstick on Vanderbilt Ave. and Bergen.
