Spicy Mangoes and More
One of Red Hook’s best treats is the weekend fare at the soccer fields (around the corner from the pool). There are a number of vendors there selling a delicious and affordable selection of South and Central American dishes. Some vendors go as far as to provide shade, seating and music.

A band arrives and take requests. The food vendors turn down their stereos for the occasion.

Coconut, Lime, Cantaloupe, Pineapple and Watermelon Juice. All fresh!

I ordered a pork and cheese papusa which I then smothered in picked onions. Some cabbage salad and fried plantains on the side.

This was a new one for me – fresh mango sprinkled with salt, chili powder, paprika and lime. THIS IS REALLY GOOD!

I can’t think of a better way to finish off the afternoon.

I have been going to this weekend food event for several summers now.
It keeps getting better. Competition amongst vendors has created a slew of new treats.
One makes a 12″ taco, and the other puts together sweet plantain with cream (yum-yum), ……
I have noticed alot people drive, stop, buy, and take off.
authentic South and Central American food at affordable prices.
none of that americanized makeover stuff.
Good luck.

Thanks for this. I was riding by last weekend thinking that I needed to stop and grab lunch next time. This weekend I will.

Ahhh, pupusas! I just filled my belly with some this weekend (following a lovely day at the pool.) Where else can you eat your fill for a $1.50? Does Brooklyn get any better?

I went on vacation in Baja mexico about a decade ago, and there was a guy who walked the beach daily selling mango’s like that. For a buck he would take a mango on a stick, peel and flower it, then sprinkle it with chili, salt, and lime juice.
I think he was my favorite part of the whole trip

[...] This isn’t really The Daily Hook style to post about such topics, but it needs to be said that Red Hook has the best mexican food in New York City. I’ve known this for awhile since I go down there to watch the Ex soccer pros from Central America try to relive their glory days at the park. 423Smith, The Gowanus Lounge, and The Porkchop Express have all recently covered this and have some great things to say. Go look at some pictures of these damn good meals! [...]

is it known yet if the food vendors are there this year for the weekend?

yup, fresh fruit with lime and chile in a bag or cup is a staple of Mexican street food, along with the elotes with mayo, chile and queso cotija.
I love Mexican street food and have never gotten sick (I grew up on the Texas/Mexican border.)
And not to mention that street food is the best, home cooked, cheap, catering to the working class.
I can’t wait to visit Red Hook for this food!!
How do I get to this area by train?
-thanks
