Yes that’s right - GNOMES!

I visited my folks up in Maine for Thanksgiving and rediscovered one of my favorite kids books: GNOMES. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the description of gnome life and culture really captured my imagination. From how they set-up their houses, to how they interact with wildlife to fables and even gnome anatomy - this book has everything. I highly recommend it as a great gift this holiday season. It is the book’s 30th anniversary - which is pretty scary since I probably have a first edition.
Later in the afternoon we went on a family walk and passed by this “fairy house.” I guess the deal in Maine is that people build these little houses for the woodland elves, fairies, gnomes etc for good luck. Not much to do in Maine.

I LOVE this book. I used to watch the show “David The Gnome” as a child. he looked JUST like the gnome on the cover!
I used to make fairy/gnome houses too as a child and leave them in the woods for them to find and live in

My mom had that book too. It’s awesome. Every time i go to visit, it’s one of the first things i want to see that make me feel at home. I remember that show too. I think it was on Nickelodeon. The gnome in Amelie is close to the same style. Anyway, glad to see someone else on the planet has actually seen this book.

I purchased the 30th anniversary edition last year and loved it so much, I bought a first edition. It’s one of my most treasured objects.

Hey, I thought nobody realised that the Gnome in Amelie is the same as David. And Yes, David the Gnome was taken from the original books. I had just googled David the Gnome, and the whole story is there. My sister has the books, and I watched the series with my daughter when she was little.
All I can say is, really, THESE are REAL gnomes, not those little lumpy ugly ones found in gardens. I would like to know where Amelie’s dad got his from.

I knew a family that had built their log house ( a giant castle of a place) around the belief in these little redhatted guys. they had passages and little rooms all through the walls and foundation of the house and even a secret hall out to the river at the end of the back garden. I think their cats got more use out of it, but it was so neat to me when I was 9 that I have never forgotten the’ kindness just in case’ way they had built their home in Haile, Idaho. I was gnome girl for halloween once too. I said I had eaten some of Alice’s mushroom on accident to be so big.

I had this book as a child & read it over & over & made little clothes & gifts for Gnomes & left them places in the woods @ different times. Interestingly enough several times the items disapeared *shrugs*
