Foil Bunny by LJ Lindhurst

Our friend LJ’s spectacular artwork is in another gallery and the opening is this Thursday.

The gallery opening is also part of Dumbo’s 1st Thursday so you can visit a bunch of other galleries that evening. Should be a fun evening of art.

Happy Day of the Dead! Now’s the time for you to go visit any family members buried in cemeteries. Clean up their gravesite and leave some pretty flowers or a little pumpkin.

Because this is mostly a dead blog, I’ll leave you with some lovely Day of the Dead skulls and skeletons. You can’t deny they are perfect Halloween decorations. Or in my case, year round decorations (in my world, everyday is Halloween) – here’s one I picked up one summer at the beach with friends.

Some fun skulls I found on the web:

And of course there are the sugar skulls:

Tim Burton

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Oh Tim Burton, why did you have to go and marry the beautiful Helena Bonham Carter when you were obviously meant for me? Hell, I’d marry Helena Bonham Carter too if I had the opportunity!

Starting November 22, 2009 and running until April 26, 2010, you can see Tim Burton’s artwork and films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

More Gorey

Well, Gorey-esque is more like it.

Which Witch?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Vintage Halloween postcards are fun but certainly not all that scary. Check out these witchy ones:

Well, this one is a bit scary. Is that a klansman chasing the witch? I’d be scared too!

Remembering those funhouse thrills

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

This time of year haunted houses pop up all over the US. Are you even surprised to learn that I love haunted houses? When I was a kid there was an old abandoned house that some clever folks turned into a haunted house tour, complete with costumed lunatics jumping out from behind closed doors and grabbing you. When you exited the house a guy with a chainsaw would chase you through the woods. Pure joy!

When carnivals came to town I’d always have to go through the horror funhouses. They were always so tacky and certainly worth a laugh. I think a little part of me always tried to scare myself with the idea that maybe, just maybe there would be a true madman hidden inside that would actually kill people.

Of course the mother of all haunted houses is Disney’s Haunted Mansion:

Disney's Haunted Mansion

This Haunted Mansion ride in Luna Park, Sydney, Australia scared the bejeezus out of Dawn Summers. Or maybe it was just that skeevy guy following us around inside the ride.

Check out these horrifying photographs from Joshua Hoffine. If they are your cup of tea, you can purchase them online. Be warned, the images below are rather tame – the others on his site are quite disturbing.

Aghast!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

This weekend hundreds of Brooklyn artists open their studios to general public. Be sure to visit our friend LJ’s studio this weekend at A.G.A.S.T. I love her work and wish I had lots of money and wall space because I would buy her entire Lock Series.

Gorey

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

It will come as no surprise that I love Edward Gorey, you know, the guy that did the PBS Mystery! opening animation. One of his most famous works is The Gashlycrumb Tinies:

Two panels from the book:

K is for Kate
Z is for Zillah

One Halloween I dressed up as Zillah, maybe I should do another Tiny for this Halloween.

And for those in the Yarmouth Port, MA area, you can attend the 8th Annual Goreyfest this weekend. Sounds like fun!

Halloween at OrangeYouGlad

Monday, October 12th, 2009

October is a special time of the year for the folks at OrangeYouGlad. We decided years ago that instead of sending Christmas cards or gifts to our clients, we would focus on Halloween (it being the bestest day of the year of course). We’re furiously working on our 2009 promotion but thought you might like to revisit some of our past promos:

Read Scary Mary’s Little Bleak Book

Create your own Paper Plate Masks

Cook up something from our Eerie Eats Recipe Cards

Buster

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

When living in a big city, one can find some amazing items tossed out on the curb the night before trash day. My best find happens to be this painting I call Buster.

Buster

Why would anyone throw this painting away, you ask. In fact, I asked myself the same thing as I clutched it in my hands. My dog Ren agreed so we carted the painting home.

Did the artist decide he just didn’t like it anymore and tossed it out? Or maybe someone’s significant other would only move in with them if they removed “that hideous little man” from their wall? The mystery still remains a mystery and Buster still hangs on my wall.

Welcome to My Nightmare

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Okay, this isn’t really my nightmare but I’m sure it was for lots of folks in the 1400s.
