At the movies

And to end the month of madness, the mother of all Halloween movies:

I hope everyone has a frighteningly wonderful Halloween!

Ok, strange way to start a Happy Birthday post to my brother!
When we were kids, my brother and I loved watching the old horror classics on Saturday nights. We loved all of the Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney and Vincent Price flicks, even the Abbott and Costello Meet the Monster of the Week movies. So, Happy Birthday Joe – these monsters are for you!

Bela Lugosi in Dracula

Boris Karloff in Frankenstein

Lon Chaney, Jr in The Wolf Man

Boris Karloff in The Mummy
And my brother’s fav:

Max Schreck in Nosferatu
Today would have been my dad’s birthday so I thought I’d feature some of my favourite fathers on film.

October 11 is World Zombie Day – your chance to smear on some blood and gnaw on human body parts. If you live in the Pittsburgh area (I’m looking at you Dave) you can do your zombie-thang at the actual Monroeville Mall, featured in George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.
Some of my fav zombies flicks:

This is on my list of movies to see – I think World Zombie Day would be a good day to do so:
And just for fun, here’s a great track from The Zombies
I’m a huge fan of stop-motion animation. I even took a class at SVU to learn how to do it myself – the model I made to animate was Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
The four artists below create some fantastic nightmare worlds. Enjoy.

Folks who know me, know that I hate musicals. This one is the exception (okay, I’ll admit I also enjoyed Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog). When I saw this movie for the first time all I could think was “I want to live in Halloween Town.” I watch it every year and still think it would be a great place to live.

If you are in New York City this weekend watch out for those slippery banana peels on the pavement, folks in Groucho glasses, or spraying water boutonniere’s – The Friars Club is hosting its inaugural Comedy Film Festival. Tonight kicks off the festivities with the US premiere of the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man.

Check out the full schedule – lots of fun films to enjoy. I know I’ll be seeing quite a lot this weekend.

Furiously working to get the Lighthouse International Film Festival program guide to print, Charlie called at the last minute to announce a new film to the lineup. All I heard was Cannes and Bastards so I immediately thought he had scored a coup and got Inglourious Basterds for the festival. Images of Brad Pitt at the beach seared my brain. Deanna was quite excited about the possibility as well.
However, the new movie was from 2008 Cannes, not 2009. So, no Brad Pitt but what looks like a crazy provocative flick – Los Bastardos
Even though Brad Pitt won’t officially be at LBI (who knows, he could own a beach house there) for the festival, you should still get down to LBI for a fun weekend of films, parties and the beach!
The Lighthouse International Film Festival lineup has been announced and I’m definitely psyched for the movies. Unfortunately I’ll be working the event and may miss out on seeing some of these great films. You can purchase individual tickets but your best bet is to buy an All Access Pass – that gets you into all the movies, the parties (who doesn’t want to party with professional arm wrestlers?) and the Breakfast with Filmmakers on Saturday and Sunday morning.

The End of the Line
Two from Tribeca:
The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

Two from SXSW:
If you’re at the festival, be sure to say hi to me and Deanna – we’ll be there representing OrangeYouGlad (and well, enjoying the sun, the beach and the movies!)
Check out this awesome poster (and web design) that Deanna did for the Lighthouse International Film Festival:
The Lighthouse International Film Festival was founded by a collection of filmmakers, film critics and film industry professionals who share a passion for film and wanted to create an event aimed first and foremost at film enthusiasts. The 2009 festival will present feature films, 20 shorts, documentaries and family films, as well as panel discussions with leading film industry professionals. Taking place on Long Beach Island, NJ — one of the East coast’s most popular surfing destinations — the festival celebrates four days of new, exciting and challenging films in honor of Long Beach Island’s historic Barnegat Lighthouse.
We’re hoping to get an OrangeYouGlad beach house for this event – it promises to be a fun-filled weekend. Come on down to LBI and check out some films, panels, parties, and the beach!
